The London to Melbourne Challenge 2009

The London to Melbourne Challenge
2009

In late October 1934 the world focused its attention on a dramatic feat of aerial adventure. Accepting the MacRobertson challenge, the best aviators from around the world gathered to race from London to Melbourne. They were competing in the best aircraft that they could muster to fly halfway around the earth. Their progress was covered by newspaper and radio for a global audience and wherever the competitors landed they were greeted by huge crowds. The whole world was watching.

We wish to commemorate that event. Accordingly we are conducting a simulated race from London to Melbourne under conditions similar to those of 1934. Pilots may fly either Golden Age aircraft of the 1930s or General Aviation aircraft of the current era.

Features of the London-Melbourne Challenge.

•	The Race begins on October 20, 2009 and ends on November 30th. Registration is due by October 28th. Later entrants may participate but not win.
•	Pilots use real weather but not real time. They may fly legs at a time that fits into their own schedules.
•	Two classes of aircraft compete: Golden Age (1930s) aircraft using primitive navigation and Modern General Aviation aircraft using modern navigation instruments. A large number of tested aircraft are eligible for participation.
•	The Route follows the 1934 race course with the same compulsory stops.
•	The pilot's cumulated Flight Time (time in the air) determines the Speed Race winner in each class.
•	The pilot's Flight Time compared to the simulated aircraft's optimal time based on maximum speed determines the Handicap Race winner in each class.

To see what's up, come over to the "Around the World Race" Forum at Sim-Outhouse where we are organizing the event.

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/forumdisplay.php?f=6

Look forward seeing you.

Your London-Melbourne Organizing Committe
PRB, Taco, RFields, srgalahad, MM, Moses03

The whole world was watching.

We're cooking up another "adventure" On its 75th anniversary, we shall organize a commemorative run of the London-Melbourne race. We shall have two classes: (a) Golden Age (through 1937) and ( Modern General Aviation (if there is interest). The start time is October 20th. (Each pilot runs on his own clock--so you can do this in your spare time.)

You can find some discussion over at the Sim-Outhouse threads:

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=21871

Please join in and help shape the event.
Active Sky Advanced Question?

Presently for my weather I use FSMeteo for FS9 and the FSX default weather for FSX. In the past I also used Cris Clouds in FS9 but since my curent upgrade to an i7 975 CPU and 64 bit system did not reinstall them.

I have debated upgrading to Active Sky for years but have really never been too picky or critical relative to clouds so I have procrastinated (Something I am very good at). However, particularly with my new system one item does bug me. My home area is in West Virginia and particularly during this time of year there are a multitude of low level clouds hanging in between the mountains. The thing I don't like is that under these conditions, the clouds below make it look like the dead of winter and everything is covered with snow.

Would Active Sky Advanced significantly improve this image? A second question would be is there any problem with Active Sky on a Windows XP Pro 64 bit system?

Thanks:
RTH

DH.88 Replica EAA

Hey Guys,

How are you all doing this Summer/Winter (July/August) ? I just got back from EAA in KOSH and thought i share a few pics of the birds we flew during the race.

Here's the one that kicked my rear-end.. The DH.88 Comet. The replica was built by the late Bill Turner in 1993 and owned by Tom Wathen based at the Flabob airport in Riverside Ca. The construction was done exactly (sans safety/instruments) as the original although the engines are different, Gypsy Queens (210hp) instead of Gypsy 6s (223hp). There was a rep from DH England who provided all the research for the replica build. I talked him and the pilot about the flying qualitites and ground handling and whether he (pilot) had flown the FS version. He did/couldn't..!!! He said the replica falls like a brick on approach while the FS vers. floats wayyyyy tooooo much! He said to alleviate the problem add 1000 lbs directly at the CG. The replica also has a tailwheel which gets rid of the ground handling problems. The only problem with the replica as with the FS version is the view on approach... None! I know! I know! you cannot modify the race version, but for fun flying the mods will help.

http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=8090

Thats me with "Grosvenor House".

Here are some more ---

http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=8091

http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=8092

http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=8093

I also seen the Piaggio Avanti II there, talked to the pilot about overspeeding on descent... He said ( and I laughed ) "If you donot overspeed on descent the you're doing something wrong." !!!

http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=8094

The following pics are a bit blurry, sorry, This was one of the first planes I seen in the early morning and the coffee was still flowin heavily through the veins LOL!
