Salon's "Ask the Pilot" has a modest proposal

Anyone here see this?

http://www.salon.com/news/air_travel/index.../askthepilot342

The "Ask the Pilot" columnist mocks the idea that modern airliners "fly themselves" (which is unfortunately getting to be the conventional wisdom on the street), emphasizes the importance of trained pilots, and then proposes an experiment:

QUOTE

Of course, the only people more insufferable than assistant professors and aviation consultants are the desktop simulator buffs who think they can hop into a 767 and fly it like a pro...

Let's try it. I need a willing participant who does not have a pilot's license or any formal flight training. We'll rent out a full-motion Boeing simulator and the instructor will set things up for 35,000 feet, somewhere over the middle of the United States. Ready, set, go. In you come and sit down. The rest is up to you. All of it. If you crash, you foot the bill and I get to mock you in Salon. If you make it, I foot the bill and write a five-page retraction carefully detailing your heroics.

Any takers?

So, any takers?

airliner fuel tanks heating

Does airliners have fuel tanks heating?
I know that PMDG manuals mentioned that b747 has temp probe in each tank and that EICAS warning message is created if fuel temp gets below -37°C, and that crew should find warmer altitudes.

Fuel is heated prior entering the jet engine combustion chamber. This is done via fuel to engine oil heat exchanger, but is the fuel in tanks heated?

The New X65F

http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/x65f.htm

I'm curious of the release date. I've been saving for the Saitek Proflight Yoke, but maybe I'll hold out for this one (or just get both). Does anyone know more about it?

I'm currently using the X52 Pro, and I'm happy with it. This new X65 has some awesome features though-- like the stick that works in much the same way the real Airbuses or the F-16 works, by pressure as opposed to actual movement. I fly about every modern sim there is, both combat and "civil'", so I'm torn in keeping my X52 and buying the yoke, or grabbing this thing up when it's released (provided it's not $400).

EDIT: After searching through the SimHQ forums, rumor (unofficial "leaked" imformation) has the price at around $750. So much for that! Not to mention I like flying whirly birds from time to time.

2012

I thought 2012 was a big, sillly, loud and enjoyable movie with great special effects and a predictable storyline.

One thing I enjoyed were all the airplanes. Every simmers fantasy of being tossed into airplanes ranging from a light twin to an AN-22 with only a couple of real life lessons gets played out. I am absolutely sure I could dodge much of Los Angeles become suddenly airborne with such aplomb in a twin, and pull an AN-22 vodka burner out of a dive just like that, too.

There were some nice touches. The icon card taped to the panel of the Russian airplane. (Certain implications and observations are way beyond the scope of a simulated airplane forum, therefore I will exercise a Ciceronian "I shall pass over" concerning the comment-worthy treatment of religions in the movie.) The confusion of the student pilot trying to adhere to his checklist while the runway is literally crumbling behind him was funny, as was his recognizing that he really doesn't know how to fly a twin-engine aircraft. With everyone's life in the balance, he scolds a passenger for leaving the aircraft before it comes to a complete start.

Sitting before the controls of the AN-22, he is as bewlidered as any newbie who just bought a PMDG title.

Air Force One plays an interesting role, as does the air wing of the carrier JFK.

Anyway, I enjoyed 2012 more because of my interest in aviation, particularly flight simming, because there is an element of fantasy most people would fail to appreciate.

First Successful simulation...

My first successful flight was in FS2002. I took on one of the flights that came bundled with the game, and flew from Pearce Ferry Airport (L25) to Grand Canyon National Park Airport (KGCN) in the default C182. I remember giving the FSATC a shot for the first time upon approach, and thought I'd try a landing while I was at it. I failed numerous times attempting landings before, but this time was different. I don't quite remember my approach, but I do remember being very high passing the airport!
On short final, I don't think I had flaps more than 10, if at all (we've all been there!), and made quite a smooth landing. I practiced my touchdown technique with water landings where I didn't have a runway to aim for.

I was very proud of myself! I remember yelling "YEEEESSSSSSSS!" After that I taxied back to parking for the first time. I felt very satisfied indeed.
That was back in early 2007 if I recall correctly, haha. First landing of hundreds, possibly thousands!!!

What's your first successful simulated flight?
