PMDG 737 NGX: The View Forward

Recommended Posts

The peaks display doesn't use radar for its info, it does look a lot like it because of the colours it uses to code the danger zones which are similar to the weather radar's colour codes, but it actually overlays terrain peaks on the DU from a database installed on the aircraft which is cross-referenced with the aircraft's position.Al
I was just going off what it said on their site, they call it a radar!

It's most definitely not a "radar" - Al is right. Also hilarious that they claim to have "pioneered" terrain display - the Leonardo MD-80 had it in 2006, the Digital Aviation Fokker after that. I have a Sandel TAWS gauge by Reality XP from before either of them that does it too. What I'm betting Ariane doesn't have is the terrain profile display on the VSD... :(

Well in that case their blurb is incorrect, although to be honest some of their site info does let such typos creep in with their famous preference for circumlocution, so I'm not hugely surprised. However, I will say that calling their V2.5 700ER a tart up is rather uncharitable. Quite apart from the fact that is if not a first in FSX, then fairly rare, there are quite a few updates to the thing, including changes to the way the FMC handles VNAV Path Descent, which was one of the complaints people had about their product, so that does at least indicate they are addressing complaints. In any case, I don't see the need for people to gleefully hope for their demise because of PMDG's imminent NGX. Clearly it will have an effect and I'm looking forward to PMDG's NG as much as anybody, if not more, but personally, I think the wider choice we have with 737s the better it is for simmers at large, and I'll be happy to give theirs a shot just as much as I will the new PMDG one, since they address slightly different user expectations, in the same way that, for example, CLS and Flight 1 have a different focus.Al

You are correct Ryan, as far as I am aware it doesn't have the VSD, which is one of the things I'm looking forward to on the PMDG one.Al

I'm not 'gleefully hoping for Ariane's demise'! Merely pointing out that they have updated their systems in a timely fasion as to coincide with the imminent release of the NGX, the most obvious one being the EGPWS 'radar' or whatever it is. I also wasn't suggesting that that was the only addition, mereley the most noticible one.

I do very much like the slightly battered look you guys have captured there on the panels. Looks really convincing.Al

Now THAT would be something new... But who could pull off such a feat? :-)

Not to be ungrateful, Vic, but I think we have thoroughly determined that the panel is awesome. How about some slivers from a different model. Maybe a piece of a leading edge or a fan blade....
