I was made in England but was born in Canada. I grew up in the Greater Toronto, Ontario area and graduated from TL Kennedy High School in Mississaga, Ontario.
I immediately joined the Canadian Forces after high scholl and enrolled in the Navy. I had originally wanted to join as a pilot, but the military said I could be anything I wanted to be as long as it was a sailor or soldier. (Something about a recruiting quota system) Not wanting to camp for a living, I chose to see the world via the Navy, so I became a Radioman. During one of the many re-organizations our military has gone through, I decided to apply for flight training and was accepted as an Airborne Electronic Sensors Operator and was off to Summerside PEI for basic flight school and the wonderful world of S2F Trackers.
After ace'ing flight school, I chose Sea Kings so I could have the best of both worlds....go to sea and fly. After 7 years as a naval aviator serving on both coasts, I was transferred ashore to CFB Greenwood in Nova Scotia to fly in the CP-140 Aurora (P3). After spending the next 8 years in the fixed wing community, I decided to retire after 22 years of service.
So, we upped stakes and moved back across country to beautiful Victoria, British Columbia where my lovely wife Kathryn had been accepted for a job. After 6 months of retiremnet, I got bored and found a civilian position with National Defence in the IT Security world, where I have been for the last 10 years.
Not wanting to leave the flying world, I was endulging in many virtual flights with MS Flight Sim. While surfing the various flight sim websites, I happened across AVSIM, a relatively new fan-based website. What's this? They're looking for reviewers? I'm in. After spending a couple of years writing Combat Sim reviews, I moved on to general aviation reviews. The reviews editor of the day (Aiden Williams) was going off to play soldier overseas (he's British Army), so they needed a stand-in while he was away. I immediately volunteered to fill these shoes.
Well Aiden ended up being deployed longer than originally planned, thanks to places like Iraq and Afghanistan, and I've been the Reviews Editor ever since.
Wow, I've been with AVSIM for 9 years now and have attended all of the Conferences, except MAAMS. Kathryn has learned about aviation through osmosis and is a member of the AVSIM family as the Financial Officer and web developer.
Keeping you, the reader, satiated with reviews is my number 1 priority as an AVSIM staff member. With all of the great products coming out, and with the support of the vendors supplying our review staff with their products....this is nearly a full time position. Albeit a volunteer position, the gratification of being a member of this great AVSIM family is pay enough. However, if I had a penny for all of the reviews I've written and edited.....I'd have a big bag of pennies.
