Mesh...yes and no...

Recommended Posts

I have been flying with mesh lately, good payware stuff too...and wow the the terain looks great...then I get to my airport...default mind you, and it is sitting up on a cliff. In real life ,and default terrain, there is no precarious cliff around this airport(KRAP). I don't know if the trade off is worth it for me. I know there are lots of airports that aren't like this, but they aren't usually in the beautiful high terrain parts of the world.I'm sure there are posts about this already but I guess my search expertise isn't that great, because I didn't find much about this. I am almost tempted to un-install all the mesh to keep from running into the cliff aproaches I have been having lately.Anyone have any advice, or how have you been dealing with this. Does FSX render this mesh better with the curved earth that was implemented. That might be a reason for me to get it. I only care about mesh when I am flying in my cessna anyway. Thanks in advance,Scott

Thanks for the reply, I did see/read that on Justins web site...just didn't realize how crazy the airports would look. The Black Hills look great, and the mesh solved many problems with the area...but the airports look like something from another planet. I am not saying there is something wrong with the payware product...it is first rate...but I have seen so many people rave about mesh, and was surprised how pronounced the flat runway thing was :( (FS2004 issue I know)...and was wondering how other people felt about mesh in this sim. I guess you have to take the good with the bad...Scott

I've started playing around with mesh also about a week ago for my first time, although i've only been playing with the freeware stuff, i seem to like it quite a bit, mind you I've never really encountered this situation, but I still have lots to tinker around with mesh though.I just hope if I do run into this it doesnt ruin my mesh experience lol

There's a scenery design program (with freeware and payware version) called Slartibartfast by Jim Keir which can automatically make Airport update files when it makes mesh so that all the default airport elevations are moved to match the new mesh. Making mesh is not too difficult once you get used to it, especially with fast internet in areas where good data is available for free (eg. Usgs data):http://www.jimkeir.co.uk/FlightSim/index.htmlUnfortunately, I don't think Slartibartfast can read the .bgl scenery files directly to make the new Airport flatten files but you can use free Usgs data to make the flatten bgl and then just use it with the FsGenesis mesh for a better match. Is there any particular region you would like done? I'm not doing too much presently so would be happy to try if it's not too big.

You will also find that there is only a small percentage where this problem will exist. You must be working in a bad area right now. I would guess that less than 5% of the airports turn out bad, probably less. I can't really think of any major ones I use that are bad, except maybe for an elevated object or a couple inches of runway elevation. I just treat it as a psychedelic experience, all part of the fun, and it's not that big of a deal. At least if it's not in your own back yard. When you see water running up and down hills now that's when it gets real funny and that's a far worse problem than the airports. Then there are the underwater highways etc.

Tried Slatibartfast for the local region:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/164710.jpgThe results were,Downwind RAP (Dflt):http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/164711.jpgDownwind RAP (with Slartibartfast):http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/164712.jpgDeparting RAP, looking N (Dflt):http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/164713.jpgDeparting RAP, looking N (with Slartibartfast):http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/164714.jpgThe scenery files if needed:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/164715.zipStill few problems but might be an improvement (found problem with Black Hills/Ice / Mitchell's Strip Airport, also Barber Strip (SD77) still on the hill). For install: Unzip of attached file, folder "Rpd" moved to the Fs9 "Addon Scenery" folder or preferred location, files renamed "FlightSimulatorSceneryNamcSceneryAP920160.bgl and FL920160.bgl" to AP920160.bgl.bkp/FL920160.bgl.bkp, scenery folder "Rpd" activated from within Fs9, Fs9 restart.Removal by Fs9 removal scenery layer "Rpd", renaming of files to original "FlightSimulatorSceneryNamcSceneryAP920160.bgl.bkp, FL920160.bgl.bkp", removal of folder "Rpd", Fs9 restart.
