REX or FEX

Recommended Posts

I would like to give my money to either one but I'm not sure which. I think both look great but I am mostly concerned about frame rates. I would appreciate some feedback from users of either one of these addons. Presently, I am leaning towards REX because it also includes what I think are some pretty good looking ground textures (the screenshots look great). Does FEX also has ground textures? I don't care about wheather engine in REX. I would not used it as I use Active Sky and I'm happy with it.Anyway, any feedback from fellow flight simmers who use these products would be greatly appreciated.Gianluca

If frame rates are your concern - it's a tossup. I have both and notice no difference in fgrams with either package. Visually I prefer FEX *BUT* that's purely subjective. That's something only you can decide.Vic

I own REX and its very good. The clouds look stunning and the runway/taxiway textures are waaay better then the default. I dont have any FPS issues but then again i have a high end machine. They both look good products and i doubt you will be disappointed whichever one you pick.

First off, I cannot speak to FEX as I don't own that one, but REX really amazed me in terms of its impact on visual quality, especially clouds and water textures of which I never really paid too much attention to before. I first tried the highest cloud textures, but they were too tough on frames, then went to the second highest (still HD) and frames were much better and I didn't notice much loss of visual quality. I also use ASA and they seem to mesh well together at least so far. Not sure of your system, but for me I lock frames at 24 and generally stay pretty close with mid-high overall settings on q9300/8800gt oc/vista32/3gb with tafficX amongst other addons (and tweaking). I've heard good things about FEX too, just no experience with it here. For what its worth. Spud

I use FEX coupled with GEX, I'd rather support the originals than imitators.

Thank you all for your responses. I appreciate your feedback. I noticed that FEX is sold through Flight1 and they offer a money-back guarantee should the software not work out for whatever reason. That's a nice feature. Since REX is sold through a different distributor (The Flightsim Store) I'm not sure they offer this same guarantee.Anyway, thanks again.Gianluca

I have both... and I have settled for REX. REX has the Amazing clouds as well as the Amazing water. Currently I am using REX only for textures.

Hmmm, looks like you have something against the REX people. Don't you prefer to have 2 or more add-ons that improve the simulator environment, so you can choose what is best for you, or even use both?Hard for me to agree with what you posted there.

I own FEX but am sick of waiting for updates and the long promised weather engine and I am thinking of purchasing REX.IMHO You would be better off purchasing REX because:-1) FEX development seems to be stalled. No updates for a long while!2) REX is in active development, and version 2 (free update) is soon to be released3) REX includes a weather engine, FEX does not4) REX includes runway textures, FEX does notedit: I just checked the FEX forum and the developer (ChrisNorris) has not even posted a message since 6 Dec 2008. If you check the REX forums you will see the developers are posting everyday.IMHO purchasing FEX is simply throwing money down the drain supporting a developer who seems to have gone "walk about". I would imagine that the FEX market has completely eroded since the release of REX and that there will never be another update for FEX.

But if we all stuck with the original there wouldn't be as much evolution. USA Roads and Birds Eye View were pioneers in their own way but other products came along and improved on the originals.

I don't know much about REX but I know that FEX is great. I bought FE for FS9 and FEX for FSX and both blew me away. Excellent eye candy!FEX was also updated with higher defination graphics and there are plenty of new cloud, water, and sky types available through the easy to use interface.

When it comes to water textures REX is the winner, no question about that(see first image), though when it comes to clouds it can be argued the FEX clouds are just as nice as the REX clouds, though personally I like the REX clouds much better. As to performance you can use any resolution you want, and even at the default 1024 resolution the REX clouds look awesome(see the second image). So I recommend REX as it has the best water, arguably the best clouds, plus it has a weather engine and airport textures which FEX does not. rexfixlow.jpgrazorline12low.jpg

Wow, these water textures are indeed great. The clouds are beautiful too. I also think that the runways and taxiways textures are a great plus for REX. I do think that REX might be the one I decide to purchase ultimately. I'm still a bit nervous about the frame rate issue though. However, because every computer is a bit different, it's hard to determine what impact, if any, this addon will have on my machine. I do have a pretty fast computer and FSX runs faily smooth on it. So I don't anticipate much of a hit. But, one never knows. Thanks again to those who have offered their views. I appreciate it.Gianluca

I have to agree with MatthewS on the support for FEX I made a post on FSW forums mid last year about FEX'es lack of promised support & updates and got pilled on by the a really excited user and one of the dev's but alas dispite even more promises about updates and fixes they've sofar totally failed to deliver....just check out there website and forums(i do from time to time hopping for some info)you'll see a total lack of info or updates/posts from the dev's so i can only assume that its now been totally abandoned,id love to hear diffrent but if i had to lay money down for one now i would be REX....the only reason i havent brought REX is because while waitting for the FEX updates that never came i pretty much modded up my own replacement FSX files that im very happy with but i am keeping an eye on REX to see how it grows and developes

Hello Gianluca,It's not in the same class of add on, but if you haven't already, go check out FTX by ORBX for some amazing eye candy. They have a 250Mb demo you can install for free, and you will be amazed at the image quality of the terrain landclass & autogen. Have you seen it? It looks more like aerial photography, not FSX. Awesome and they are working on N American currently.Caio,Noel
