DX10 Runway/Taxiway flickering FIX !

Recommended Posts

you can call them whatever you like yes. but you shouldnt modify the stock airport if you have an aftermarket AFCAD for that particular airport. you should edit the modified airport or you wont see the changes. (or you will overwrite the modified airport with the stock one +taxiway)
Yeah, I figured that about the aftermarket airports, I was just thinking in terms of the future where I could see myself adding a new version of an airport and wanting to delete the fixed 'stock' .bgl to prevent any possible conflicts, and wanting to make it as easy as possible to find the fixed 'stock' airport's .bgl for deletion.

Well I've gotten around to trying a few airports. The first three I tried worked great (KGIF, KLAL, KEYW), but I'm having trouble with KAAF if anyone wants to give that one a looksee and see if they can figure out why I can't seem to get that one to work, it would be appreciated. :)

Happy to help - later tonight I should have a chance.

Here you are!http://www.toofiles.com/en/oip/documents/rar/kaaf.html1) create a folder called ADE (or whatever) in your main FSX folder2) create a subfolder called scenery and unzip this file into it.3) add you ADE folder to your librarythat's all.Next file you'll make with ADE should go in the same ADE/scenery folder. You can add a file when FSX is launched going to your library, clicking ONCE (just to select it) the ADE folder and then clicking OK to reload the ADE folder with the new added file.

Thank you, David! I'll be loading it up here in a few minutes and checking it out. Just out of curiousity, did you have to do anything different to fix it?-George

David,Just wanted to report back that KAAF works perfectly now, thank you. :) I have not been adding an apron (or changing an apron surface for that matter) on the previous airports that I got to work (KGIF, KEYW, KLAL), instead I've just been dropping two taxiway nodes under random buildings on the airports, and that has fixed it on the ones I've mentioned. I'm a little confused as to why some airports can be fixed with adding taxiway nodes, while others are fixed by the aprons, but as long as they work in the end, I'm a happy camper. :)-George

I just did a little more testing, and I'm more confused than ever, even though I'm getting stuff to work now lol. At KGIF (asphalt), adding a concrete apron (or changing an existing apron to concrete) doesn't fix the flickering there, but adding a concrete taxiway did fix it. I then went back to KAAF (stock, concrete) and no combination of taxiway surfaces would fix it, but when I added a concrete apron, the flickering stopped. So it seems like some airports need a taxiway to fix, while others need an apron. Just some observations I've made that I hope someone can either confirm or debunk. -George

I'm sorry guys to just bust in like that. Is there a thread around that would explain advantages and disadvantages of running FSX in DX10?

I have similar experiences -1. KORH: I tried adding aprons, both asphalt and concrete, but this did not solve the flicker. I added a concrete taxiway, and that worked as previously reported.2. KAAF: I added concrete taxiway but that didn't work. I added two apron polys - one concrete and one asphalt, and flicker is gone.In my minimal testing, addition of two apron poly, and two taxiway lines, one each texture asphalt and one concrete, should eliminate flicker. I'm going to try to get a list of 20 or so stock airports which flicker and I'm going to test with this quadruple fix...will report back later. As a note of caution for the unintiated: It is not good to have more than one AFCAD (airport facilities data) file per airport. There is a utility, also by Jon Masterson, called Airport Scanner which will allow you to search and ensure only one AFCAD exists for each airport. Should you accidentally create an AFCAD for an airport which already had one, many odd things may happen. I advise anyone experimenting here be sure to download and utilize Airport Scanner before reporting anything odd.THANKS!sg

Good to know that I'm not the only one who experienced this, and I'm looking forward to the results of your additional testing with the quadruple fix. :)-George

I've done some more testing, and Gridley, your quaruple fix seems to work on each airport I've tried it on without fail. I've started working my way through Florida, checking each airport (alphabetically, by town) to see which ones need fixing, then compiling a list and doing a 'batch' of them. So far I've worked through all cities and towns through 'B' (in addition to the ones I mentioned that I had done earlier) and plan on picking up at the start of 'C' tomorrow. The airports I've fixed so far are:KEYW - Key West InternationalKAAF - Apalachicola (I redid what David Roch did, but instead of changing an existing apron, I added a hidden one.)KLAL - Lakeland LinderKGIF - Winter Haven GilbertX06 - Arcadia MunicipalKAVO - Avon Park MunicipalKBOW - Bartow MunicipalKBCT - Boca Raton1J0 - Tri CoFA44 - WillisX05 - Pilot CountryX47 - Flagler CoAll but the first four were done using the 'quadruple fix', and they all worked on the first try. I figured I'd post my results back here just to let you know that the quad fix seems to work for every situation (at least every one I've encountered so far.) Great idea, Gridley. :)-George

No need for a "quadruple fix"!!! :--)))))))I'll try to sumarize this thread to make it easier.Prerequisite: Install FSX SDK. 1) Download (and donate if you can!) AIRPORT DESIGN EDITOR here 2) In the main FSX folder create a folder called CONCRETE (or whatever) with a SCENERY subfolder . Add this folder to the library. 3) Launch FSX and place your aircraft on an airport where you know you've got taxiways/runways flickering4) Launch ADE and select the same airport in the File menu>Open stock airport5) Make the following changes:- If the airport textures are ASPHALT, add a small concrete taxiway wherever you want using the "Add Taxi Link" button. Make sure the texture you choose is CONCRETE (right click/properties) and reduce the default width of the added taxiway to one meter (you need a very small portion only!). Alternate method : double click on an appron and change its texture to CONCRETE. Both methods are working, choose the one that matches your taste.- If the airport textures are CONCRETE, add a small asphalt apron wherever you want using the "Create apron" button. Make sure the texture you choose is ASPHALT and again reduce the default width of the added apron to one meter (you need a very small portion only!). Alternate method : double click on an appron and change its texture to ASPHALT.Again, both methods are working, choose the one that matches your taste. 6) File menu>Compile Airport. Compile the file without modifying its name directly into the CONCRETE/scenery folder created above. 7) In FSX, open the Scenery Library and click once on the (already added) CONCRETE folder, then press OK. This will reload the simulator with the new Bgl you've just created.Create as many files as you wish, compile them and reload the CONCRETE folder every time to see the change directly in FSX without having to close/relaunch the simulator.Warning! Don't use the "reload scenery" mapped key or the "reset flight" function, it won't work. Perform step 7 only!

Best regards,
David Roch

Hi David,As far as I know, the purpose of testing the quadruple fix is to have a known set of fixes that will work universally on every airport, all the time, so that there's a simplified, defined set of parameters that could potentially be used by anyone who may be able to come up with some kind of a batch method for converting the airports. At least that's what was going through my head when I started testing them that way. But I agree that when doing them by hand, airport-by-airport, your way is the most efficient. A quick question about what you posted, maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I can't know without asking. Are you saying that asphalt airports need a concrete taxiway, but the concrete airports need an asphalt apron? Or am I misunderstanding that? If I am misunderstanding that, do you know a way to tell whether an airport needs a taxiway or an apron to fix it?Thanks again for all the help and insight, it's most appreciated. :)-George
